Dani Linnetz - Five And Dime At the risk of seeing some eyes roll, allow me to put on my grizzled-rockcritic-vet hat on for a minute. If you listen to enough indie songwriter music, you realize how important it is to have a coherent and talented band behind you. Dani Linnetz has managed to assemble a gorgeous band for this four-song demo. I mean, gorgeous. The mandolins, guitars and fiddle (courtesy of David Gould and Liz Pierson) surround you like a warm bath after a long day, and Taro Baugham's drums are spare and steady, setting nifty table for Dani's gentle, bitter voice. You can hear the transplanted Los Angeleno in her laid back delivery, and in the songs, which deviate from the usual wronged ex-girlfriend angst into that quiet, sad acceptance you hear in certain bluegrass records. Seeing her live, I never guessed that she'd have such a country streak about her. "I Will" is clearly the class of the four songs on here. A song about the beginning of what she knows in advance is going to be a manipulative relationship that's going to end badly, most of the melody is spent in the meaty part of Dani's vocal range, and Gould's Hammond B3 solo I'm sure has Gram Parsons smiling down from heaven. If it wasn't for Dani trying to bend her voice in directions it sometimes won't go, the songs on Five and Dime would rank with the best work of Emmylou Harris or Steve Earle. Still, this is one fine, professional-sounding demo, and Dani should be proud of it. - Chico Bangs Because of laser scam one British casino lost a ton of cash, but could not prove the guilt of people |
