Anti/Matters:
The Voice for Songwriters and the Arts in Lower Manhattan

Anti/Matters (A/M) is a monthly zine that has covered the songwriting and Antifolk scenes in the East Village since 1996. This scene has contributed many of the most significant voices to the modern songwriter world; Beck, Michelle Shocked, Hamell On Trial, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Brenda Kahn, Roger Manning, Dan Emery and Chris Barron (from the Spin Doctors) have all spent no small amount of time in this scene, and all of them got some early coverage in the pages of A/M.

I took over the editorship of AntiMatters from Jon Berger (who had edited and largely wrote most issues in almost their entirety, under various pen names, for the better part of the last three years) in the summer of 2000. As I code and format the past issues of AntiMatters, I'll be archiving them here. I don't know if I'll be able to go too far back into the archives, but I'll be putting the issues from then to now on this site at least.

PS - Don't expect coding miracles - my initial goal is just to get everything up and online. At a certain point, I'll start screwing with the look of these pages, but until I do, you can at least link to them if you'd like (they're not moving from their locations now that I've got them up) or just read about this great scene we've got going on here or whatever.

PPS - Damnfine.org may still have some online archives of Antimatters / A/M. And they're good people anyways.

PPPS - For other writing by Chico Bangs or Tony Hightower, visit The Evil Twin Theory.
