Hi, I'm Tony Hightower. If a piano landed on my head and I were to cash out today, the last thing anyone would be able to put into my obituary would be my last album, A Single Angry Word, which came out the end of 1999, as I was moving to New York. Now, I still think that's a pretty good record, but that was four years ago now, and I've written literally hundreds of songs since then, many of which don't totally suck. The goal of the Area 52 Project is to actually get some of those songs (and, more importantly, some new ones) to completion. The plan is to release one song every Monday for all of 2004, and at the end of the year or maybe at a logical interval, I'll release a nice annotated & illustrated record that y'all might be compelled to purchase. Like I said, we'll see. Life happens, audacity is sometimes punished, but consider this my primary new year's resolution, and consider yourself a witness to my declaration of intent. Don't look for themes or consistency in the songs (or go ahead, see if I care). These songs are free to download and share (we'll see what bandwidth issues are like, but for the time being, go nuts), although I've added a Paypal link, and any tips you'd see fit to contribute would be greatly appreciated and ought to keep this free through the whole year. What I really want, though, is input. These songs will be mostly demo versions in varying degrees of completion, and I'd like to include you in the creation process. Let me know (either by messageboard or by email) if something's good or not, or if I've ripped off the Shirelles, or whatever. Finally, word to Stephen Merritt, Marshall Crenshaw and They Might Be Giants for trying similar experiments in sweatshop songcraft and succeeding spectacularly in the past, and to my mate eyeballkid for doing something similar this year, in a different musical end of the pool.
